3 Things That Have To Be Considered When Choosing Interior Paint Colors

December 19, 2016

When you’re forced to make a home repair, a trip to the hardware store can be drudgery. If you’re doing it yourself, you have to head to the store, pay for supplies, and then spend your Saturday afternoon trying to figure out how to fix your problem.

On the other hand, choosing paint is usually a lot more fun! It’s easy to get excited about, because it’s something that you actually want to do. So you can casually head to your local hardware store, pull all the swatches you want, and then take them home and imagine the entire room that color. Then all you have to do is contact DJ’s Painting and your local painters will take care of the rest.

Of course, there are a few precautions that need to be taken when you’re picking your paint colors. Let’s take a look at the times an interior painter could try to talk you out of a particular color.

Check the Time Of Day

One aspect of paint that many people ignore is how it looks in sunlight. Don’t just check the paint swatch when the sun is on the opposite side of the house; be sure to put the swatch on the wall where it will be in direct sunlight. Swatches can certainly look different when the natural light is streaming in, and that purple you like so much could have a lot more blue in it than you originally anticipated. And speaking of light…

What Kind of Lights Do You Have In the Room?

Light bulbs didn’t change much for the first 100 years they were around. They started as a tungsten filament inside a clear glass housing, and that’s how they stayed for decades. Then came opaque bulbs and “soft white” tungsten bulbs, followed by the ugly light of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s), and then softer and more pleasant CFL’s. Many fixtures and lamps in the homes of today are moving toward LED’s, which have the instant-on aspect and warmer light of the bulbs that many of us grew up on.

What’s all this mean? CFL’s are on their way out, and LEDs are the wave of the future. If you haven’t yet, switch to LEDs in the room you’re painting so that you’re judging the swatch in a more modern light.

What Room Are You Painting?

It’s probably no surprise to you that color can influence people. Orange makes you more apt to exercise, blue makes people more efficient at work, and Baker-Miller pink makes people incredibly docile. You’ll never see a popular restaurant painted grey or purple, because those colors make you less hungry. When choosing a color for a room, do a little research on how it will affect you. It’s best to not paint your kitchen red; nearly every fast food chain contains the color red because they’ve discovered that red makes people eat more and act more impulsively.

The colors you choose are always up to you, but we want to make sure that you’ve looked at your choice from many angles so that you’re happy with your decision. When you’ve made your choice, contact your local painters at DJs Painting today!
