Now Is The Best Time!
May 23, 2013
Memorial Day is right around the corner, and this is the perfect time to consider repainting your home. The reasons are many. First, the weather is absolutely perfect: a general rule of thumb is to have conditions of 50 degrees F and up, and no rain. Why? Well, chillier weather is not optimum for paint to bond to a surface, and if you think a good rain messes up a freshly washed vehicle — Murphy’s Law in action — you should see what it does to paint on a house! If you live down at the shore or own shore property, it is perhaps your last chance to get the look you want prior to the busy summer season.
What’s the best way to tackle a home painting job? Well, painting isn’t as simple as opening a can and using a hand brush on wood. That approach would take forever and its shoddiness would leave you breathless, if the painstaking labor didn’t leave your breathless first. If you’re going to paint your own home, make sure to allot the proper time and resources for the job. First, the right brand and amount of paint is paramount. This is determined by the size of your home and the exterior material that covers it, be it wood, brick, stucco, siding, or concrete. (I could spend considerable time detailing the best fits for each, and the amount of paint necessary by size, but that’s for another column entirely.) Next, the proper tools are critical. Let’s revisit the above analogy of a person dipping a brush into a can. That trick might work in a movie scene, or perhaps when Huckleberry Finn whitewashed a fence in a book, but in real life on a real house? Not so much. You need rollers, paint pans, drop cloths, protective tape, a good ladder or two, and of course brushes for touching up and hitting corners and tight spots. Labor could be tricky. Painting requires attention to detail and is much harder work than it seems. Family and friends are often tapped as a viable labor source, but the results might not be what you want. Streaks, missed spots, and caked paint generally turn up, even when an untrained painter has the best of intentions. Remember, the appearance of your home is the first thing people notice when visiting, or perhaps even more important, when renting or purchasing your property.
