If you go down south, you will begin to notice a trend. No, not that their food is amazing, or the beautiful sunny weather year round. The trend that we are talking about is a little less obvious, but nonetheless still there. At almost every home, you will notice that the porch ceilings are all painted blue! Different shades of blue, yes, but still blue!

The Question

Why do people paint their porch ceilings blue instead of the traditional white, or other natural color? That is the question that we are going to try to answer in today’s blog.

The Orgin

The tradition of painting the porch ceilings blue started when the people believed that the blue ceilings kept away haints, which were the spirits of deceased loved ones that were trapped on earth. They believed that the blue paint would protect them from these haints. Descendants kept the tradition of painting their porch ceilings blue, but they realized that the blue ceilings also kept bugs away!

Bug Protection?

The blue paint on the ceiling confused the bugs into believing that the blue ceiling was the sky and would therefore not lay their egg and build nests on something that they believed to be part of the sky. This provided a bug-free environment for the southerners on a warm summer night that may have been ruined by those pesky bugs had the ceiling not been blue!

Calming and Relaxing?

Research has also proven that blue is a calming and relaxing color, which would work perfectly for a couple just wanting to relax on their porch. As you can see, there are many reasons to paint a porch ceiling blue. What started as a superstition, led to the development of something brilliant! When your porch ceiling is painted blue, you will be protected from the bugs and you will have a calm and relaxing environment to enjoy!
