I am often asked, “Can I repaint my vinyl siding?” and how could I forget the ever popular, “How long will my paint last?”
A Little About Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding has become very popular and has been commonly used since the early 80’s. It was advertised as a forever material since the color goes all the way through in most brands with only a few exceptions. We all know plastics last forever, or so we have been told. In cold climates, vinyl can become brittle and chip or crack if impacted. It can also oxidize a little, which causes a chalky film that looks like a slight haze to develop on the vinyl. This can be washed off by a skilled pro with a good soft wash or pressure wash.
However, there are quite a few reasons that people may want to paint their vinyl siding and trim. The first being as simple as wanting a color change. Another being that you had to repair or replace a section and it doesn’t match properly. Whatever the reason, the good news is you can absolutely paint vinyl siding and it will last for 15+ years before it needs to be repainted.

The system for painting vinyl is as follows:
- It first needs to be pressure washed to remove any dirt and chalky oxidation.
- Then it can be painted with 2 coats of 100% acrylic self priming paint. The color must not be a dark color, otherwise it will get hot and can warp. This makes the siding appear as if it melted. Sherwin Williams has a Vinyl Safe Color Chart that only has highly reflective colors. There are quite a few safe colors to choose from.
